There are many video editors out there on the internet which
you can download and use on your PC. But how can you know which one can perform
the task you want to accomplish. Some of these software are free and others
require you to pay before using. One promising software which enlightened me
and gave me the idea to write this review is OpenShot
Video Editor.
OpenShot video editor is an open source software which allows
you to perform several editing touches to your videos with ease. The project
was started by a programmer called Jonathan Thomas and it is now maintain by
OpenShot Studios and individual programmers. Besides being a powerful video
editor program, it can perform the function of a movie maker. The software is completely
free and available to any PC user. You can use at your home or office without
paying any penny for the license. The application runs on Mac OS, Windows and
Linux.
Setting up the program is very easy to do. The installation
process isn’t any tedious task to accomplish. Once you have the software
downloaded on your PC all you have to do is to double click the setup file and
follow the simple instructions to get it installed on your computer.
One thing I liked about my first encounter with the software
is the user interface. The program is very simple to navigate around but is a
bit intimidating when using the various functions and features it offers especially
when you are new to video editing. But then you can check out the tutorials provided for beginners
on YouTube. The dark UI also looks cool but you can change it to a light
version in the preference window if you do not feel comfortable with the dark
theme.
OpenShot video editor supports many video and audio formats
you can think of. In fact the program uses the FFmpeg library to read and
write most multimedia formats. The software can handle video formats like MP4,
AVI, WMV, OGG, MKV, Blu-ray, FLV, MP3 AAC, WMA and many more. Image formats
such JPEG, GIF, PNG and other are well supported by the software.
It also comes with its own preview player which allows you
to view your project as you work. This feature enables you to know the final
output you plan on making and also make any changes if your targeted goal is
not achieved. You can also use the available keyboard shortcuts to work faster.
You can find all the shorts in the preference window. OpenShot video editor has
track or layers feature which allows you to use multiple files at ago. Videos
or images can be placed on top of others and you can arrange them according to
your style.
There several task you can accomplish with this OpenShot,
the primary task is editing videos. This application has a host of editing
tools at your disposal. The split tool allows you to trim portions of videos
which you think are not necessary or needed. To use this tool all you have to do
specify the start and end times and create and new video for your project. Other
tools I find fascinating is the cutting tool, scaling tool, rotating and
transform tool.
You also get the chance to change the alpha values of files
you want to edit, change frame rates, adjust the x and y position of clips,
adjust the volume of videos, remove audio from videos, animate clips and many
more. Control is in your hands when using the software for your editing. You control
how fast or slow your clips should move.
The effects provided by the video editor software allows you
apply some various visual effects to your project. You can apply color
saturation effects and alpha mask effects to videos. You can also make use of
the blur effect, Chroma key, brightness, Negative and Deinterlace effects. One thing
I did not like was the number of effects provided, only 7. Maybe in the future
the developers may add more.
There are quite a lot of transitions to choose from. In case
you will be using more than 1 video for you project, transitions tool can be
relied upon to help you create a stunning and pleasing video. Some common
transitions incorporated in OpenShot video editor include fade, circle out to
in, circle in to out, wipe from right to left and many more.
Creating titles for your project is very easy to do with
this software. You can use this feature to create an introduction and conclusion
titles for your projects. You can easily choose which font type to use, the
font size, text color and the background color. You can also choose from
different title templates as well. I also found out that this software works
with other programs like Blender and Inkscape. Inkscape allows you to apply
some advances editing to your titles whereas Blender allows you create 3D
animated titles with ease. You should have these 2 programs installed before utilizing
this feature.
The cross platform supports allows you to works on your
project on different operating system without any problem. You can choose to
work with Windows today and decide to work with Mac OS or Linux some other time
without causing any problem to your project. Once you are done with your
project you can save it to the format you want without any hassle. You can save
you projects in preset profile for Web (YouTube, Flickr, Vimeo Metacafe, etc.),
Blu-ray, DVD (NTSC or PAL) and Devices like Xbox and Apple. You are not limited
to only the preset profile options. You can also decide to save your work in
any format you want like MP4, MOV, AVI, FLV, OGG, WEBM and MPEG. You can also
opt to choose the quality you want and the video profile whether in HD, 2K, 4K
and many more.
In Conclusion
If you are looking for something simple by yet powerful then
consider choosing this software. It is an industry standard application, born
with powerful features, supports more than 50 languages and very easy to use. Tell
